On 16th September 2019, Oracle introduced a new set of Always Free Services to Oracle Cloud (OCI) which also includes the Lifetime Free 2 Autonomous Database, 2 Compute (Linux), 1 Load Balancer & 100 GB of Storage.
Note: In my previous episode (https://k21academy.com/31), I covered the Important Key takeaways from Oracle OpenWorld 2019 & the 2nd point is where I discussed the Always FREE Oracle Cloud Services.
This blog post is for a beginner or those who are just starting their journey to Oracle Cloud & want to create Oracle Cloud Free Trial Account
In this blog post, I will discuss what’s included & how to create Always Free Autonomous Database, Linux Instance & A Load Balancer.
What Are Always FREE Cloud Services?
The new Always Free Cloud services that are part of Free Tier cover some IaaS and PaaS technologies, providing the resources for free as long as they are used.
Specifications include:
- 2 Autonomous Databases (Autonomous Data Warehouse or Autonomous Transaction Processing), each with 1 OCPU and 20 GB storage. To know more about Autonomous Database, check HERE.
- 2 Compute VMs, each with 1/8 OCPU, and 1 GB memory. To know more, check HERE.
- 1 Load Balancer, 10 Mbps bandwidth. To know more, check HERE.
- 2 Block Volumes, 100 GB total, with up to 5 free backups.
- 10 GB Object Storage, 10 GB Archive Storage, and 50,000/month API requests. To know more about Storage, check HERE.
- 10 TB/month Outbound Data Transfer.
- 500 million ingestion Datapoints and 1 billion Datapoints for Monitoring Service.
- 1 million Notification delivery options per month and 1000 emails per month.
How To Sign-Up For A FREE Account?
It’s really quick and easy. Follow our step-by-step guide (https://k21academy.com/cloud01) to register for a FREE Oracle Cloud Trial Account.
It takes about 10 minutes to fully provision your account, but once it is completed, you’ll receive an email informing you that it’s ready to go. You can log in with your email and password at the following URL:
- Oracle Cloud Console: https://cloud.oracle.com/sign-in
1) After you’ve successfully logged in, you will land on the OCI Console:
How To Create A FREE Autonomous Database?
1) After logging in to the Cloud Account, click on the hamburger menu on the top left side & select ‘Autonomous Data Warehouse’.
Note: You can also access it from the Quick action menu
Click on ‘Create a database‘ to get started. It will bring you to the Autonomous DB instance creation screen where you can enter a display name, database name and choose your workload type.
2) You will see the screen shown below. Select the required compartment & then click on ‘Create Autonomous Database’.
Note: To know more about Compartment in Oracle Cloud (OCI), please check HERE.
3) Enter a display name, database name and choose your workload type
4) Choose deployment type – most likely you’ll choose ‘serverless’ (which really just means the DB resides on shared infrastructure) and toggle the “Always Free” option
5) Create your admin credentials and finally, click on “Create Autonomous Database” to launch the provisioning of your first free instance.
6) You’ll be redirected to the instance details page – note the ‘Always Free’ label and the Instance Type of “Free”. It’ll take a few minutes to provision your instance.
7) And when it’s complete, you’ll see the state changed to ‘Available‘. Next, click on ‘DB Connection’.
8) Click on ‘DB Connection’, download your Client Credentials Wallet. This is used by your applications and tools to initiate a secure connection to your Autonomous DB instance.
9) It will prompt you for the password, enter the password which you have used during the DB creation, and click on ‘Download’.
Note: To know more about how to connect to an Autonomous Database using SQL developer, check HERE.
And that’s it. You’ve signed up for a free Oracle Cloud account and launched an always free DB instance with 20 GB of storage in less than 15 minutes.
How To Create A FREE Compute Instance (Linux)?
1) Log in to the Oracle Cloud account.
2) Go to the Navigation Menu under Core Infrastructure, click on ‘Compute’ and then Instance.
3) Select ‘Compartment’, & click on ‘Create Instance’. Fill out the required information.
You can change the image source by clicking on ‘Change Image Source’. Also, click on ‘Show Shape’, and Network & Storage Options for more options.
4) Do not forget to click on ‘Assign a public IP address’ under the Networking options if you want to connect your instance with the internet.
5) Add the SSH Public key which you can generate from Putygen to connect your Instance via PUTTY.
6) Click on ‘Create’.
7) You will see the Instance start Provisioning and will be available in 2 to 3 minutes.

How to Create A FREE Load Balancer?
1) Log in to the Oracle Cloud account.
2) Go to the Navigation Menu under Core Infrastructure, click on ‘Networking’, and then ‘Load Balancer’. Click on ‘Create’.
3) Enter all the required details. Select ‘Micro Bandwidth’ to get always FREE Load Balancer. Click on ‘Create Load Balancer’.

How To Create 100 GBs Of FREE Block Volume?
1) Log in to the Oracle Cloud account.
2) Go to the Navigation Menu under Core Infrastructure, click on ‘Block Storage’, and then Block Volume.
3) Click on ‘Create Block Volume’, enter all the required details & you will get the Block Volume which you can later attach to Free Compute Instance.
Well, that’s how you create an always free account & resources like (Autonomous DB, Compute Instance, Load balancer & Block Volume).
